In June the roadside turns yellow, white and purple. Ox-eye daisies sway in the wind. A bumblebee crawls deep into a red clover flower and comes out dusted with pollen.
Road verges matter more than they seem. Together they form a long ribbon of flowers across the Netherlands. Insects use them as routes and as food. The less often a verge is mown, the more species flower.
Join in:
- Count the flower species on one fixed stretch of verge.
- Use an app such as iNaturalist to identify a plant.
- Report special species on Waarneming.nl.
- Ask your municipality to mow verges in phases.
Write your finds in a field notebook that can take a beating: Leather notebook holder with Moleskine.
